Lomilomi
is an ancient system of bodywork developed in Hawaii.
Traditionally it is practiced by healers (kahuna
lā’au lapa’au) and by
masters of the Hawaiian martial arts (’ōlohe
lua).
Like all endeavors in ancient
Hawai’i, lomilomi
was conducted with prayer and intention.
Lomilomi
practitioners generally use the forearms in long sweeping and
rhythmical strokes across the body. These
flowing strokes relax the entire
being, assisting in releasing old beliefs, patterns and
behaviours that cause limitations and which are stored in the
cells of our body. We often think of memory, beliefs, our
"programming", as being stored in our head, in our brain.
Actually, this memory and other programming is stored in all the
cells of our body.
An idea or belief can block
energy flow as much as muscle tension can.
Lomilomi
helps release the blockages, whilst at the same time giving the
energy new direction. This form of massage is not just a
physical experience; it also facilitates healing on mental,
emotional and spiritual levels as well. The Kahuna view is that
all aspects of the body are one and that the physical, mental,
emotional and spiritual are all part of the "whole" self. When
healing occurs on one level, all levels are affected.
